"The Possibility of Silence" is part of MUME's annual program on memory and the right to be forgotten. Conceived by Israel Martinez (MX), the project is presented in collaboration with Guadalupe Aldrete (MX/DE), Natalia Hurst (AR/DE), Paul Schuberth (AT) and Tomas Novak (CZ/AT). In the age of information, we seem to be building the most comprehensive archive in human history, where no one disappears without a trace. Beyond questions of transparency and access, we must also ask: how do we protect privacy and preserve silence, both personally and collectively? The Possibility of Silence reflects on silence not just as an individual right, but as a shared practice. During the opening, visitors are invited to mute their communication. A recording booth allows anonymous messages to be encoded and broadcast. Performers whisper secrets to individuals. Musicians play barely audible sounds and silent megaphones, purely sculptural, are scattered throughout the venue. Finally, within the exhibition's context, Gerald Straub (AT) hosts a Roundtable discussion to reflect on how we create our own noise in the urgency to be remembered, only to then question why there is no silence around us.
